In environments where work at height is required, permanent lifeline systems play an essential role in worker safety.
Installed on industrial structures, rooftops, wind turbines, or telecommunications towers, they often represent the last line of defense against falls.
These systems are generally composed of a wire rope anchored to the structure, along with various mechanical components. Exposed to weather conditions, corrosion, friction, and mechanical stresses, these elements can deteriorate over time.
Periodic inspection is therefore essential to confirm the integrity of the system and its compliance with applicable standards, including CSA Z259.
WIRE ROPE INSPECTION
The wire rope is the central element of the lifeline system. Its condition must be inspected regularly to detect any anomalies that could compromise its strength.
The inspection aims in particular to identify broken wires, corrosion, and abrasion.
Any degradation of the wire rope can reduce its ability to withstand the forces generated during a fall arrest.
COMPONENT INSPECTION
Other system components are also verified, including structural anchors and supports; hooks, connectors, and hardware; thimbles, attachments, and tensioning devices.
INSPECTION METHODS
Depending on the installation, different techniques may be used:
- detailed visual inspection
- dimensional and mechanical verification
- non-destructive testing of the wire rope (electromagnetic and other methods)
